Here’s a step-by-step look at how every part of the device works together to make that possible:

1. Sensing Heat – The Thermal Sensor

Microbolometer (Thermal Sensor)
Everything around us gives off heat, even in the dark.
The microbolometer is a sensor inside the device that detects this heat, even if it’s just a small difference.
It’s made up of thousands of tiny units called pixels.
Each pixel absorbs heat from whatever it’s pointed at.
When it absorbs heat, it changes slightly in temperature, and that causes a change in its electrical resistance.
That change is how the device knows how hot or cold each part of the scene is.
This heat information is turned into a signal — kind of like a temperature map made of tiny electrical measurements.

2. Converting the Signal – From Analog to Digital

Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC)
The signal from the thermal sensor is still just a continuous voltage.
So, the ADC (analog-to-digital converter) steps in to:

  • Measure these electrical signals at very fast speeds (many times per second).

  • Convert each measurement into a digital number.
    Now, instead of vague signals, the system has a grid of digital temperature values, one for each pixel.
    These digital numbers represent how hot or cold every part of the image is — and that’s what the next stage uses to build the actual picture.

3. Processing the Image – Making It Clear

Image Processor (DSP or FPGA)
At this point, the device has raw thermal data — a digital image made of heat values — but it’s not easy to see or understand yet.
That’s where the image processor takes over.
This is the part that does the real-time magic to turn numbers into a clear picture. Here's what it does:

a. Contrast Enhancement
The temperature differences in a scene can be very small, so the image might look flat or dull. The processor:

  • Spreads out the temperature range visually.

  • Makes warm areas warmer-looking and cool areas cooler-looking.
    This helps you clearly see edges, objects, or living things that otherwise blend in.

b. Noise Reduction
Tiny electrical fluctuations can create random specks or “static” in the image.
The processor uses special software to smooth this out without removing real details.

c. Non-Uniform Correction (NUC)
Not every pixel in the sensor reacts the same way — some might be too bright or too dark.
The processor corrects these differences so the whole image looks even and balanced.

d. Color Modes (Pseudo-Color Mapping)
Since we can’t actually “see” heat, the processor assigns colors or shades to different temperatures.

  • White-hot: Hot areas show as white, cooler areas as black.

  • Black-hot: Reverse of white-hot.

  • Color palettes: Like “rainbow” or “ironbow,” using colors to make details stand out.
    These color modes don’t change the data — they just make it easier for your eyes and brain to recognize patterns and differences.
    This whole process happens very quickly, so what you see on the screen is happening in real time, as it’s being detected.

4. Displaying the Image – Showing You What the Sensor Sees

Once the image is processed and enhanced, it’s sent to the screen on your device.
An OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diode) screen produces its own light and shows sharp images with high contrast.
An LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) uses a backlight and filters to show the image.
Both types of screens light up individual pixels based on the processed heat data, creating the thermal image you see.
